The article discusses the transformation of Steeple Square, a historic church complex in Dubuque, Iowa, into a vibrant community hub. Initially serving German-speaking immigrants and providing essential social services, the complex was repurposed to include an event center, affordable housing, childcare services, and vocational training facilities, thereby revitalizing a declining neighborhood and preserving the area's rich architectural heritage.

2022 Excellence in Historic Preservation Award

On November 1st the DC Preservation League announced the recipients of the 2022 District of Columbia Awards for Excellence in Historic Preservation. Alongside other incredible historic preservation projects - including the Jefferson Memorial and the United States Capital - City Ridge was recognized and awarded for exemplary Design and Construction. The Durable Slate Company played a significant role in bringing this iconic building back into service.

2022 Excellence in Construction Awards Win: Fairfax County Jail

This week, it was announced that our work on the Fairfax County Jail was submitted by the general contractor HITT and won the 2022 Excellence in Construction Awards!!! Our work was recognized for the category Historic Restoration.

The annual Excellence in Construction Awards recognizes and celebrates outstanding projects built by Washington-area ABC members. The awards competition serves to raise the level of construction standards throughout the industry by recognizing the workmanship of those who contribute and by showcasing the results of their dedication.


ABC contractors entered 150 projects in categories including, but not limited to, commercial, commercial/residential renovation, drywall, educational, electrical, excavation/site preparation, heavy/industrial/transportation, historic restoration, industrial, interiors, landscaping, masonry, mechanical, medical renovation, mega project, mixed-use, residential, restaurant interior build-out, retail and specialty.

This is an amazing accomplishment! Congratulations to all involved!!!

Durable Company Costume Contest

This year, we are having our first annual Durable Halloween costume contest!!  Employee submissions can be made October 3rd – November 2nd and will go through an admissions process before being posted for voting.  Any employee from any branch can submit a current photo of their costume for this year.  Prizes will be as follows:

1st Place: $100

2nd Place: $75

3rd Place: $50

Submissions are for employees only, but you can submit a family photo if it relates to your costume.  After all submissions are sent in and approved, we will hold company wide voting the week of November 7th.

Annual Ronald McDonald 5k Walk and Run

The Ronald McDonald House has opened their registration for their annual 5k Run and Walk!   This year, the event will be held virtually between Sunday October 2nd and Saturday October 15th and can be done any time within that time frame.  We would love to get a group of us (virtually) together to participate in this to support a great charity!  They will also be holding their annual in-person event this year, too, on October 3rd at National Harbor in Fort Washington, MD if you are interested in doing that as well. 😊
